Now that you have set up their home and then you asked, “what should I feed them?”. We’ll don’t worry about it! Here is some stuff that you should know when it comes to feeding them:

  • Don’t panic if you notice if the food you gave to your Hermit Crab looks untouched, they eat it but they take really small bites and they eat it very slowly! And top it all, they usually eat at night.
  • Put into consideration your Hermit Crab’s small claws. So if you’re going to give them pellet type food, make sure to crush them into a powder, you can feed them 1 teaspoon of Hermit Crab food.
  • A healthy diet is essential to your crab so make sure to supplement it with chopped leafy veggies or fruits such as kale, broccoli, apples, and banana. Just leave it in their cages or terrarium and just clean up the leftovers the next day.
  • Your Hermit Crabs are quite sensitive to metal, so be sure that their food and water bowls are non-metal, non-porous materials. Ceramic is one of the suggested food bowls for them.

Health & Safety

  • Your Hermit Crabs may feel inactive or sluggish if the following is present on its habitat: overcrowded terrarium if it’s feeling lonely, and leaving its shell more than the usual. Your hermit crabs maybe also Molting which may cause it to look “sick”.
  • Hermit Crabs are highly vulnerable to chemicals, so if you’re going to clean their terrarium and you’re going to let them roam around a specific area in the house, make sure that they are safe from reaching household chemicals.
  • Check your Hermit Crabs regularly, they are small creatures, and noticing if they’re active or feeling ill would be difficult compared to taking care of dogs and cats. Not eating, inactivity, excessive molting, damage claws or limbs, or foul odor from its shells are the signs that your Hermit Crab may be ill.
  • If you’re a first time Hermit Crab owner, it’s recommended that you wear a thin glove so if in case it pinches you, you won’t panic accidentally dropping and harming it.
  • While you’re setting up its terrarium, make sure to place them on a soft or flat surface. Don’t put them on a high-level surface since they will most likely crawl around the area and they might fall.
  • Have kids with you? Supervise them on proper handling the crabs and make sure that they won’t stress the Hermit Crabs too!
